It presents the standards and guidelines for completing the index in a technical sense such as specifying fields and their typical entries. * The file entitled PRIMER.DOC (or PRIMER.TXT) is an overview designed to provide new indexers with an overview of the project undertaken by the Indexing Group. This document also specifies which fields are mandatory or optional as well as those that should be completed if possible. * Also, the file entitled ATSFNAME.DOC (or ATSFNAME.TXT) is designed to specify the preferred nomenclatures to be used within the indexes. The need for strict conformity in how we describe a subject will reduce if not eliminate confusion when searching a database. * In a similar vein, we have produced a list of Santa Fe diesels and motor cars from the time of their acquisition until their scrapping. This file (ATSFDSL.XLS) also provides the preferred model descriptions. For those users who do not use MS Excel, there are individual tab delimited text files: DSL_1965.TXT (Text only with delimited tabs) DSL_1973.TXT (Text only with delimited tabs) DSL_1985.TXT (Text only with delimited tabs) DSL_1995.TXT (Text only with delimited tabs) DSLAMTRK.TXT (Text only with delimited tabs) CLASSIFICATION OF CATEGORIES This table defines the various categories and demonstrates the typical detail within each subsequent sub-level (if applicable). EXPLANATION OF COLUMN CONTENTS: Category Description is not a field but just a plain English explanation of the adjacent CAT CODE abbreviation. CAT CODE (Category Code)- Mandatory: The code used by the indexer to categorise the various categories. As each category will have its own database, the category code allows the user to identify them should they all be merged into a universal database. Indexers are free to devise their own category code abbreviations during their compilation, but upon completion these must be changed back to the standard category codes. TYPE - Mandatory: Within each category, there are varying types that are specific to it. There need not be any logical correlation across the various categories. The examples shown are typical TYPE entries used within each category (ie. CAT CODE). SUB-TYPE - Mandatory: This is the specific sub-type descriptor used within the category and type. Once again no logical correlation necessarily exists across the categories and types, but are specific for the SUB-TYPE. The examples shown are typically what you would expect to find within that Category/Type grouping. ID: A number usually identifies a subject at its most unique level, and it may also include an assigned name (eg. CK Holliday). Alternately, some subjects do not have a numeric identifier, as they are identified by an assigned name (eg. a location or a passenger car). There are three fields associated with a subjectís unique identity. The Number (No.) Identifier, its (No.) Qualifier (if any) and/or a Name Identifier (if applicable). For simplicity sake, in the following chart we have shown the ID to be any or all of these three elements combined. However, when it comes to indexing the subjectís ID, these fields are to be completed only as required. SAMPLE OF CATEGORY STRUCTURE (Category Desc.) Hayden IMAGE TYPES DIAGRAM: A technical diagram similar to a drawing, but lacking any dimensional and/or scale references. DRAWING: A technical drawing complete with dimensional and with/without a scale. FLOOR PLAN: A birds eye view of a subject, with/without dimensional or scale references. ILLUSTRATION: Basically applies to an artistic rendering of a subject as opposed to a technical drawing or diagram. MAP: A geographic drawing of an area similar to that found in an atlas. It does not necessarily have to have latitude or longitude references, nor even a scale indicating distances. It can be a simple diagram showing stations dotted on a line or an artistic 3D illustration-come-map showing mountains and valleys surrounding the railway line. TABLE: A chart or table usually portraying data. PAINT CODE ERA DESCRIPTION ëAí Pre-1890 Dark barn red (mineral brown) with green under eaves, white lettering green or red roofs; Some buildings appear to have been painted tan or yellow. ëBí 1890-1925 Dark barn red (mineral brown) with green under eaves, white lettering, red roofs. ëCí 1925-1955 Yellow with red roof, green trim, white sashes, black and white signs. ëDí 1955 on Eclectic Notes: There are pages and pages on how structures were painted - and even though we know the standards, and what they proscribe, it really boils down to personal observations, poor photos, lack of color control in reproduction, and just plain old insufficient objectivity by a lot of the observers and interpreters. CONSIST (TRAIN) CODES CONSIST CODE DESCRIPTION FRT Means some sort of freight train. FRT make up other solid-consist train types as needed, eg. "Freight, Coal". FRT Means a freight train with a known symbol, eg. "Freight, LA-BS-123" (or whatever the symbols look like). FRT INTERMODAL Means a freight train of all intermodal cars. FRT LOCAL Means a local freight train. FRT REEFER Means a freight train of all reefers. FRT THRU Means a (full-length) through freight train. LOCOS Means a train made up (mostly) of engines (such as helpers returning light), perhaps with a caboose. MIXED FRT+PSGR Means a local mixed train with some freight and passenger cars. MOW WORK Means a maintenance of way train for working on the track, etc. MOW WRECK Means a train for clearing a wreck. PSGR Means some sort of passenger train. PSGR Means a passenger train identified by name, eg. "PSGR, Super Chief" PSGR Means a passenger train identified only by number (not a named train), in which case use a pair of numbers (westbound/ eastbound) with a slash between, eg. "PSGR, 65/66" (always give both numbers, regardless of which way this train is going) PSGR BL Means a passenger train of (mostly) bi-level cars [not used on ATSF]. PSGR EXPRESS Means a passenger train of (mostly) baggage and express cars. PSGR HL Means a passenger train of (mostly) high-level cars. PSGR HW Means a passenger train of (mostly) heavyweight cars. PSGR INTERURBAN Means a passenger train consisting of interurban electric cars. PSGR LW Means a passenger train of (mostly) lightweight cars. PSGR MAIL Means a passenger train of (mostly) mail and express cars PSGR MIXED Means a passenger train with no predominant type of car. PSGR MOTORCAR Means a passenger train pulled by a gas-electric or RDC unit, with or without trailing cars. PSGR OLDTIME Means an old-time passenger train (before full-length wood cars). PSGR STREETCAR Means one or more local streetcars (trolleys) coupled together. PSGR TROOP Means a passenger train consisting (mostly) of Army troop cars. PSGR WOOD Means a passenger train of (mostly) full-length wood cars. Some passenger cars had a name (eg. Red River Valley), and these are to be included in the Name Identifier field. Length of field is only intended to serve as a guide. There is no reason why field lengths cannot be greater or smaller, although for Excel users the maximum length for a cell is 255 characters. 1 STANDARDS GUIDE FOR INDEXING AT&SF IMAGES Revised: 20-May-2000 ñ [3:00pm] ñ 1 ñ indxstds abridged.txt
